  • Glue (the type used in carpentry)
  • Screwdrivers
  • Several dowels or pins
  • A regular sized hammer
  • Tack nails
  • A drill
  • Saw (circular / table)
  • A router
  • Pencil
  • A measuring tape

You might also need some papers for sketching the basic layout of the project.

Planning the Basic Layout

Integral to learning how to build a chaise lounge is getting the measurements correctly. Before cutting anything have all the piece sizes predetermined. The wood type can be teak, pine or whatever type you prefer.

Creating the Back and Seat Frames

The first step is to prepare the frames. For the base use a couple of 2 x 4. Saw them to about 6’ in length. The frame for the rear end should be 4”. The required 2 x 4 is the same as the base.

At this point it would be a good idea to finish each part before joining. By this we mean painting, sanding and staining after each piece is cut. This will help speed up the process of linking all the components later on.

The Slats and Supports

Knowing how to build a chaise lounge requires you to use the 1 x 2 stock. Usually the cut length is 6”. You can increase this if you like. Now get the dowel. Slice it to about 4” longer. This is necessary for the 2 x 4 boards. Take the 4 1 x 4 stock and cut them in the same manner. If you are having trouble remembering the length, remember: the pieces for width must fit in the length pieces.

Back Rest Support

For the back rest slice a couple of the 1 x 3 stock. The length should be equal to the hypotenuse of a triangle (45 degrees). The hypotenuse is the side of a right triangle opposite the right angle.

The starting point for the measurement will be the backseat bottom. This is key in learning how to build a chaise lounge. In this case you will have to judge the length yourself. Next cut a couple of 1 x 2 boards. This should be 4” from the back up to the seat frame. Use the router to make half circles where you will recline.

Lounge Arms and Legs

For the legs, cut the 2 x 4 boards into the desired shape. Cut and fashion the arm rests as you like. For the end points, taper it to about 2″. Make a couple of support parts. The height is up to you. Finally drill some holes to connect them.

Sanding prior to painting is recommended as it helps the paint stick. If you haven’t painted each piece, do so now.

Putting Everything Together

Drill openings in the end caps and fasten them to the side frames. Repeat the process for the slats. Make a hole in the seat and rear intersection. Put nails on the horizontal support on the seat frame. Finally, connect the backrest support with the dowels.
With the right equipment, anyone can learn how to build a chaise lounge. When you finally make one, you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
