How to Build a Fountain

A fountain will bring a touch of class and beauty to any household and garden. Build a fountain and inject a sense of wonder and majesty in your home.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to build a fountain. With a few simple tools and equipment you can have one installed in your home without too much trouble.

Required Tools and Materials

  • Basin or tub (for the water)
  • Water pump and power source
  • Tubing
  • Flower pots (at least two)
  • Rocks
  • Mesh
  • Flowers
  • Plants
  • Chicken wire

Choosing the Site

Pick a site that will display it prominently. It can be near the plants and flowers. Or it can be in a space between them. At the same time it needs to be near a power source so the water pump will keep working.

Adding the Water and Rocks

You should begin to build a fountain by putting the basin / tub in place. Fill it with water. Add some rocks. Stack them atop one another. Some would prefer to paint them black to render it almost invisible. That is only optional. Although natural type rocks will do, some prefer cement blocks. Either type will do nicely. Also, some prefer that the rocks be leveled to make stacking easier. The decision is up to you.

Putting the Pots in Place

To make the “waterfall effect” take the two flower pots. Fill it with water. Turn one upside down and place it on top of the other.

Before putting in the container, make a hole in the pot. Put the water pump into it. Use twine to connect them. Put the pots atop the rocks you just put in the basin. To build a fountain that is more realistic, add a mesh to make a filter for the water.

Connecting the Tubing and the Water Pump

Put the tubing through the pot hole. Next take the chicken wire and put the tubing through it too. This serves two functions: it acts as a cover for the pot and also acts as a platform for the other rocks. To cover it up, just add some rocks and plants. You can also put in some flowers.

Finishing Touches

Put a lid on the tubing via a rubber. Put pebbles and small rocks around it. Be sure that you put in the right amount of stones as you build a fountain. Too much can lead to overflowing.

Check the power source connections. This needs to be in working condition so water can be pumped in. When making adjustments to the power source, take all the necessary precautions.

There are many different types of stones out there. Do some research. By learning the various types you can give it a unique look. Be creative when arranging the flowers and plants. You can make a particular color dominant or have multicolored flowers adore the area. Look at different designs to gain inspiration.

If you have never tried to build a fountain, it’s not as hard as you think. Start by having a clear vision of the finished product. Gather the tools and follow these instructions. By taking your time, you’ll be able to make one.
