How to Draw Flames

Drawing is an enjoyable and profitable hobby that anyone can easily learn. This interesting type of visual art helps people express their feelings by drafting attractive images and figures. Amateurs can show their drawing skills by illustrating images that have basic and simple shapes and lines such as flames. To avoid experiencing hassles and delays in the activity, it is best that artists get all the needed materials like crayons, a pencil, a paper and an eraser beforehand. It is also beneficial to follow the simple steps below to learn how to draw flames.

The Outline

Start the project with providing an outline for the drawing. To know how to draw flames, it is best to begin with determining the final appearance of the figure. For instance, some illustrations are made up of several curved lines, while others are composed of numerous teardrop shapes. Individuals who are new to drawing flames can begin with making S-shaped flames since these are easy to draft. Afterwards, start making an outline for the drawing. Flames are usually composed of curved lines, S shapes, inverted S shapes and diagonal lines.

To provide a nice outline for the illustration, remember to connect all the lines and do not allot spaces between the figures. After drafting the outline for the image, make a horizontal line that connects the bottom portions of the lines at the outer left and outer right part of the drawing.

Making the Details

After drafting the outline, the next step is to provide the details of the illustration. Identify the kinds of lines and shapes that will make the core and inner portion of the flames. Imagination is essential in this part of the activity. The inner portion of the flames can be consisted of small flames. As soon as the details were completed, use a clean eraser to eliminate unnecessary shapes and lines.

Finishing Touches

To finish and to make the flames look realistic, get crayons and color the drawing. Use different colors for the inside and outside portions of the drawing. Some artists use red and orange to shade and color the outside portion of the illustration, while they use yellow to color the inner portion of the drawing. To make the image more attractive, color the core of the figure with blue.

Tips and Warnings

Learning how to draw flames is easy if drafters are committed and are willing to allot enough time. Amateurs can use pictures as well as photographs of flames to have references for the draft. It is also necessary to use a clean paper as a medium to emphasize the flames. Above all, do not hesitate to ask help from professionals if there are questions and problems with the drawing.

How to Draw Anime

Anime is a very popular form of art that started in Japan in 1917. This art form has great influences on Japanese culture as well as world culture. Anime started to become famous to people in other countries when the western adaptations of the television series “Astro Boy” was launched in 2003. With the presence of computer tools, making Japanese animated television series and films became easy. However, to help individuals who want to learn how to draw anime, below are guidelines and steps in illustrating animated characters.

Required Materials

Before proceeding with the simple steps in drawing an anime character, it is important to gather all the needed materials such as a pencil and a paper. Aside from these things, it is best to have an eraser in case you want to remove smudges in the drawing. After getting all the materials, it will be easy for anyone to learn how to draw anime.

Knowing how to draw anime starts with learning the proportions of the body parts of the character. For instance, it is important to know that the head of the character is larger than the head of human. In addition, the shoulders are larger than the shoulders of human. Moreover, the body of this character is usually thinner than human body.

Start with the head. At the center of the paper, draw a circle for the head. Choose the style of the face of the character. Most anime characters have round eyes and large nose. Write a vertical line at the center of the circle and three horizontal lines crossing the vertical line, one at the top, center and bottom. The lines will be helpful in drawing the mouth, nose and eyes of the character. Draw the parts of the face. Choose a hairstyle that will suit the character.

Draw the neck and shoulders of the anime. Make a horizontal oval at the bottom of the shoulders for the chest. Make oval shapes at the outer left and outer right part of the chest for the arms. Draw a circle at the end of the arms to create hands.

At the lower portion of the chest, connect an oval shape for the body of the anime. For the legs of the anime, draw two vertical oval shapes at the lower portion of the body. Finally, connect horizontal oval shapes for the feet. Finish the illustration by drawing shoes and clothes of the character. Use the eraser to clean the illustration. Remove the smudges and unnecessary lines in the drawing.

  2. Position the bottle on the launch pad and slide the u-shaped pin directly above the notches of the bottle’s neck.
  3. Turn the air pump on (between 45-75 psi) to pressurize the rocket.
  4. When you’re done, yank the string connected to the pin and your rocket is ready for take off.

How to Read Music

Reading music could seem like a daunting task, especially for someone who does not have any background. Music uses its own language using signs and symbols. To understand music, you need to understand what the symbols mean. The shape and position of the symbols have meanings that the reader needs to understand.

I. The Staff – The staff is made up of five lines with four spaces in between. Each of these corresponds to a note. This is used as the basic space where the other symbols are placed.

II. Clefs – These are symbols placed at the beginning of staffs. These show the readers what kind of notes the staff corresponds to.

A. Treble Clef (G-clef)

This clef is used in writing music for musical voices, such as sopranos, altos, and tenors. Music played by most woodwind instruments, high brass instruments, and stringed instruments, like guitar and violin, are also written on a treble clef staff. In addition, the notes written with this clef typically corresponds to the notes played with the right hand on the piano.

The notes played on the lines of a treble clef staff, are (from bottom to top):

The mnemonic phrases “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge” or “Every Good Boy Does Fine” can be used to remember the order of these notes.

The notes written in the spaces between the lines are as follows (from bottom to top):

This sequence is easily remembered because it spells the word “FACE.”

B. Base clef (F-Clef)

This clef is used to write music for lower pitched instruments, such as the bassoon and the base, and low brass instruments, such as the tuba and the trombone. The notes written on a Base clef staff corresponds to the notes played by the left hand on the piano.

The following are the notes played on the lines of a base clef staff (from bottom to top):

The mnemonic phrases “Good Buritos Don’t Fall Apart” or “Good Boys Do Fine Always” can help remember the sequence of these notes.

The notes written in the spaces between the lines of a base clef staff are as follows, (from bottom to top):

This sequence can be remembered with the aid of the mnemonic device “All Cows Eat Grass.”

III. Key Signatures – These symbols are located directly to the right of the clef. These symbols may be a flat, a sharp, or natural.

A flat written on any line or space of the staff indicates that the notes located on that line or space should be played flat. This means it should be played one semi-tone lower. This symbol looks like the lower case of the letter “b.”

A sharp written on a line or a space in any staff indicates that all notes written on that line or space should be played one semi-tone higher. This symbol looks like a number or a pound sign (#).

A natural sign written on a line or a space of any staff indicates that the notes written on these lines and spaces should be as one would normally play it. It cancels out the sharp or the flat by placing it before a particular note. It looks like this: ♮.

IV. Time Signatures – Time signatures indicate the number and kind of notes there are per measure. They usually consist of two numbers and appear like a fraction. The number on top determines the number of beats per measure. For example, the time signature ¾ means that there are three beats in a measure.

On the other hand, the number at the bottom typically indicates which note gets a beat. The number at the bottom could be 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16. These numbers corresponds to a specific note, as indicated in the table below:

Bottom Number Note

1 Whole note

2 Half note

4 Quarter note

8 Eighth note

16 Sixteenth note

Thus, the time signature ¾ means three quarter notes per measure, and 5/2 means five half notes per measure.

V. Types of Notes

  • Whole note – similar to a small unfilled circle. It is worth four beats in common time.
  • Half note – appears just like a whole note with a neck on its side. It is worth half the duration of a whole note.
  • Quarter note – similar to a half note, but with its center filled. It is worth ¼ the duration of a whole note.
  • Eighth note – similar to a half note with a curly line at the end of the neck. It may be placed in groups of four, three, or two. These notes are worth1/8 of the duration of a whole note.
  • Sixteenth note – similar to a quarter note, but has double curlies at the end of its neck. It may also be placed in groups of four, three, or two, joined by a double line. These notes are worth 1/16 of the duration of a whole note.

VI. Rests

  • Whole rest – appears like dark rectangles suspended from the second line from the top of a staff. They are worth the same duration as whole notes.
  • Half rest – appears like dark rectangles sitting atop the third line of a staff. It is worth the duration of a half note.
  • Quarter rests – these are represented by a distinctive symbol that looks like a bird flying sideways. These are worth the same length as quarter notes.

How to Make Sugar Crystals

Sugar crystals are used to make rock candy. They are mainly created by dissolving sugar in boiling water and allowing it to form crystals. Food coloring can also be added to the mixture to create colored crystals.

To make sugar crystals, the first thing you should do is to boil water. While waiting for the water to boil, tie one end of a string to a pencil or a pen. Use cotton or wool strings. Avoid using a nylon string as sugar will not crystallize on this type of material. If you have no other material except a nylon string, tie a paper clip at the other end of the nylon string. The clip is where the crystals would grow.

Once the water is boiling, add a teaspoon of sugar and stir slowly. Keep adding sugar and stirring until you notice it accumulating at the bottom. This means that saturation point has been reached and the sugar is no longer dissolving.

If you prefer to make colored sugar crystals, add in a few drops of food coloring. Afterwards, pour the mixture in a clear glass jar. Do not let solid bits of sugar get inside the jar.

Put the pencil over the mouth of the jar, with the string hanging inside. Place a paper towel on top of the jar. Place the jar in an area in your home where it will remain undisturbed.

After a few days, check your jar. You will notice crystals have already formed on the string. Let the crystals form until they stop or until they have reached your preferred size. Carefully take the string out of the jar and dry the crystals.

How to Draw a Manga Character

Develop your own manga character by deciding on some traits like the background, story setting, gender, face, body type, hair, accessories, and other characteristics relevant to the character.

The materials you need are a paper, pencil, ink and color (if you want to color your manga).

Here are some instructions in drawing your manga character:

Draw the head by starting with the upper half. It should appear like the half of an oval. Then sketch the lower half of the face. If the character is a male, draw a broader face with a square chin. If you’re drawing a female character, draw a more slender face and a more pointed chin.

Draw a set of big, circular-shaped, and even eyes. Emphasize the pupils of the character’s eyes as this shows most of the personality of the character.

To draw the nose, just make a small right angle at the center of the face. Darken the inside of the angle to develop the nostril. Tilt the line up or down for more complex emotions.

Draw hair depending on the personality projected. If the character is a fun loving girl, she might have long curly hair. A tough guy might have hair sticking out, or slicked back. Athletic characters have shorter hair. Start drawing the hair at the shoulder or neck. A female’s shoulders are smaller and her neck may be longer. For males, emphasize masculinity by having big shoulders  and a long neck.

Imagine the torso of your character and draw it depending on the gender and age. A female has a torso shaped like a milk glass while a male character has a square shaped torso. A young child will not have the curved shape of an adult female body, nor the muscular upper body of an adult male.

Hands and Arms

The hands and arms convey the action of the character. Is your character walking, running, or standing? Are the character’s arms flexed? Extended? Or simply placed by their side? Decide and then draw.

Draw a triangle under the torso and erase its bottom. Then, project lines from the remaining sides of the triangle to form your manga’s legs.

Lastly, draw ovals for the feet.

Your next step is to review your manga then start outlining the character in ink or color.

How to Draw a Dragon

To draw a dragon, you need the following:

  • image or picture of the dragon you wish to draw
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • paper
  • coloring materials

First, you need to make an outline.

All drawings should start from an outline to give a person a guide or basic reference point of what to draw.

For the outline of the dragon’s head, you just have to draw two circles forming the number 8 in a diagonal or V-shape position. The upper circles will represent the dragon’s eyes while the lower circles will represent the snout or nose of the dragon.

Draw two S shapes on both sides of the circle. You have the choice as to how thick or thin the neck of your dragon will be.

From the neck, draw another big circle. This time, make it big enough to create the body of your dragon.

Draw a long tail that has an arrow shape at its end.

Front Claws and Feet

Draw the back feet of your dragon by making a horizontal oval shape perpendicular to the spot where the tail and the dragon’s body connect. Draw the claws at the bottom part of the oval.

Draw the wings on the upper part of your dragon’s body. You will have the choice as to how big or small the wings of your dragon will be.

Going Into Details

After you have made the outline, it’s now time to go into details. Draw a big number 8 shape to represent the shape of the dragon’s head. You can make the eyes of the dragon look angry and fierce or you can make them look cute. It all depends on the shapes and strokes that you create.

The most used details for the tail, body, and neck of the dragon are the scales. Big or small, rough or smooth-looking, scales are almost always present in dragon drawings. You can also add some horns and weird, pointed-looking scales on your dragon’s body.

For the wings of the dragon, you can draw spikes and scales. Additional bony protrusions can also be added in the wings and other parts of the dragon’s body to make it more realistic.

After drawing your dragon in pencil, it is time to color it with your colored pencils or crayons.

How to Draw a Dog

To draw a dog, you will need the following:

  • picture or model of the kind of dog you wish to draw
  • sketch pad
  • coloring materials
  • pencil
  • ruler

Below are some instructions:

  1. Before you start, familiarize yourself with the picture or image of the dog that you would like to draw.
  2. On the sketch pad, draw a rectangle that would be big enough to represent the body of the dog. Make light pencil strokes so that you can erase them when you make the final shapes later.
  3. The rectangular shapes will serve as the reference point for other parts of the dog’s body. The next part that you will draw is the dog’s head. Do this by drawing a smaller rectangle on the upper left corner of the big rectangle.
  4. Draw the legs of the dog by sketching two long vertical rectangle blocks on both ends of the big rectangle. The two vertical rectangles will serve as the four legs of your dog.
  5. Draw a line which would divide the small rectangular shape into two parts. This line will serve as a reference point to draw the finished shape of the head of the dog.
  6. You can start to draw the ears, eyes, chin, mouth, and nose of the dog.
  7. When the important parts of the dog’s head are finished, you can add additional features such as hair spikes and whiskers. If you want, you can also add a cute dog collar and name to your dog to personalize your drawing.
  8. After drawing the head of the dog, connect the small rectangle to the big rectangle by drawing a diagonal line in between them to serve as the neck of the dog. Make sure that you draw a neck that is proportionate to the body of the dog.
  9. You can add curves and muscles to other parts of the dog’s body to make it more realistic and closer to the breed of dog that you have in mind.
  10. Add details to the feet of the dog by making the paws clearer and by outlining it with dark pencil.
  11. Don’t forget to add a tail to the end of the dog’s body.
