How to Install Fonts

Fonts are built in most operating systems but there will be times when you’ll need to put in some more. Uncover the ways of installing fonts and get the typeface you need.

There are numerous ways of installing fonts, and is something every computer user needs to be aware of. The following is an overview of how it’s done in Windows and Mac systems.

Note: it’s best to use only one format. There are three kinds widely available: True Type, Open Type and PostScript. It is possible to have them all in the same system. However it can cause some display problems so using one format is recommended. This is true for most operating systems.

Adding True Type and Open Type in Windows XP

The first thing you have to do is unzip the package. If they come in a CD or DVD, insert it in the right drive.

Here are the steps for installing fonts in Windows XP. Click the Start Menu and choose Settings. Select Control Panel. Depending on your Start Menu arrangement, you can just click Start and choose Control Panel.

You’ll see several icons. Double click the Fonts folder. Choose file and “install new font”. Select the drive (if your CD / DVD is drive E, choose E). Go to the appropriate folder. If there are sub folders go to the one you want.

Make a selection. If they are adjacent, click one and hold down the shift key. Click the one at the bottom. Everything in between will be highlighted too. Ensure that the “copy fonts to fonts folder” is checked. Click OK. The files will be copied to the hard disk.

Adding in PostScript is done with Adobe Type Manager, which is built in. If you’re using Windows 98 or NT, download this free software from the Adobe website.

Adding True Type or Open Type in the Mac

Open Type and True Type work in Mac OS X. The Adobe Type Manager is included in version X. If you will be installing fonts in version 8 and lower, download the application from Adobe.

Close all open software. Go to Finder and head to the correct drive / folder. Select the ones you need. For PostScript include the printer outlines. After selecting, drag the selection into the Library. Put copies into the Classic folder if you want them to appear when running in Classic mode.

Adding PostScript Type in Mac OS 9.x

Shut down all open applications. Go to Finder. Select the font suitcases. For Mac 9 you can choose 512 simultaneously. For version 8, 128 at a time is the maximum. Drag the files in the System folder. Click OK.

Using Font Managers

Installing fonts can be made easier with custom programs built for handling these files. There are several available on the Net.

The very same distance must also be set for the line posts. Take out the chain link fabric. Install it by starting from one of the terminal posts. Get the tension bar and then use it on the very first row of the fabric. Be sure to stretch out and fasten the material.

Steps to Install a Shower Door

  1. Remove your current shower rod and curtain. Fill the holes with glue if the rod is held by screws on the wall. Let the glue dry completely. If you are going to replace an old shower door, remove all of its sealant. This will ensure that the new sealant will have a flat surface.
  2. Measure your tub’s length at the center of its ledge. This is the area where the door crack would go. At this point, remember to cut off 3/8” from one of the ends of the shower track to make it easy for the vertical parts to slide into place.

    • To prevent water from leaking out from the sections, apply silicon caulk on these areas. Attach an elbow at the end of the drop outlet. Finally, using a set of mounting brackets, attach the downspout to the side of the house.

How to Install a Door

  1. Position it properly in the opening. Make sure it is centered in the frame.
  2. Use finishing material such as a piece of drywall to adjust the door. The finishing material will act as a spacer against the studs of the trimmer. If you haven’t installed the finish floor yet, raise the side jams to the right level. You can use blocks to do this. Doing so will prevent you from having to cut the bottom of the door.
  3. Check if the door fits properly into the opening one more time. Check if the jams are plumb from front to back and in each side. Place a set of tapered wooden shims between each of the jams. This will hold the door in place.
  4. You can then start to nail the jams. Do the lower hinge first. Nail through the jams and shims an inch into the stud. Ideally, you should use 10D finishing nails. Place the nail at the area where the stop molding would cover it. Perform the same steps on the middle and top hinges. Ensure that the jam above the doorway is straight and level.
  5. Shim the opposite jams found at the similar locations. Do not nail the area where you would put the latch.
  6. Take off the bracing of the door. Install the lock set. The procedures in setting up the lock vary from one style of door to another.
  7. Cut off the shims, and nail the threshold between the door’s jams. The threshold should rest firmly on the subfloor.
  8. Install the stop molding using 4D nails.

How to Make a Styrofoam Cutter

To make your own Styrofoam cutter, you will need some round brass welding rods, a piece of Masonite, and a piece of timber with 40 mm x 20 mm dimensions.

Steps to Make a Styrofoam Cutter

  1. Use the 40 mm x 20 mm timber as an undersized frame. Glue the piece of 400-mm square Masonite on it with the rim of the square Masonite extended over the two sides of the undersized frame by around 15 mm. Slide a fence clamp onto the board to enable cutting with set sizes.
  2. Bend the brass welding rod to a circle with a 200 mm radius. Then drill a hole in the middle-rear frame and push one end of the brass rod into that hole. Make a brass clamp out of a 2-mm brass rod. Then drill the brass clamp to slide on the 8-mm clamp. The clamp can actually take two clamping screws each with 3mm size: one will clamp a piece of element wire and the other the 8-mm rod.
  3. For the bottom electrode, bend a 3-mm brass rod around a 10-mm former for just about three loops. By then, a spring-like material that keeps cutting wire tensioned is formed. Bore a hole in the middle-spar of the frame. Then push one end of the rod into this hole and glue it to keep it from rotating. A clamp like that of the top rod is made on the other end.
  4. String the element wire in-between the clamps into a hole that is made in the board and then add a little tension. Join the wires of a charger to the bottom coiled electrode and to the rod. After this, the cutting wire will heat up and can cut foam easily. To adjust the angle of the cut, just slide the top clamp of the rod. For a fence, use a piece of light angle. Clamps and wing nuts can be attuned for the cutting size.
  5. You can pick up a socket from an unused item and have it fixed to the frame. Then wire the socket to the two electrodes and plug the charger into the socket.
  6. To have a smooth cut, do not stop the cutting wire and start again. Instead, keep it moving.
