How to Repair Cracked Engine Blocks

An engine block holds the cylinders of a car’s combustion engine. This is often made of cast metal. It protects the parts of the engine itself. This often obtains cracks obtained from automobile accidents.


Metal Stitching


Most people prefer to metal stitch cracked engine blocks. In metal stitching, or simply metal locking, a crack in the engine block is fixed without welding.

Metal stitching is an easy and cost effective method. You can metal stitch a cracked engine block with the use of stitching pins. Most stitching pins or bolts are made up of dowels, tapered rods, threaded rods, copper plating, or zinc plating.

If you fix your cracked engine block by metal stitching, you should use a metal stitching kit. This kit is comprised of all the bits and pieces you need to carry out a good metal stitch and fix an engine block. A complete kit is available in a number of specialty shops.

To fix a cracked engine block by metal stitching, you will need a hammer, drill bit, or torque wrench to place a stitch within the crack. Particular types of stitches with shoulders are incorporated in some kits. These shoulders enable you to drive a stitch into the casting so the threads do not show at the exterior. Stitches with shoulders allow you to get a good-looking finish. Perfect metal-to-metal finishes are easy to get done.




Some metal stitching kits will require you to apply some type of sealant or epoxy.

Follow the directions to mix the substances for epoxies. Apply it in a rough shape on the crack. Let it settle. Do some cosmetic finishing by filing the putty so it doesn’t protrude. You can do this by using sand paper or a similar material.

Some epoxy compounds will seal cracks in multiple substances. Certain epoxies can be used in making pressure proof repair, in irregular areas, or in some recesses that are hard to fix using other methods.


Note on Welding


If your car has a cracked engine block, don’t go directly to a mechanic and have it welded. The notion that such a situation is best dealt with by welding it is not usually true. Welding an engine block can bring more damage in the long run. Welding an engine block should only be done when there are holes in it, instead of cracks.

How to Repair a Radiator

A radiator is a kind of heater that works by transferring thermal energy from one medium to another. This is done to cool or heat the air. There are several uses for a radiator. It can be used in a number of settings such as in a car or in a room. Radiators are more commonly used in cars.

This device can break down due to age or improper use. Your radiator can also break if the vehicle suddenly overheats.

Allow the radiator to cool down for about 30 to 45 minutes before doing so. There are two common problems with radiators.


Radiator Hose Leak


1. Examine the radiator hose and check for leaks.

2. If you see any, patch them with sticker tapes. Make sure that the tapes you use are of high quality.


Pinhole Leak on the Radiator


1. Use any amount of epoxy putty to stop the leakage. Put the epoxy on the hole. Follow the instructions that came with the putty.

2. Start the car and give it a few minutes to warm up. At this point, the putty would have blocked the pinhole leakage.

This repair procedure only solves the problem temporarily. While the radiator is working well because of the putty, take your car to a professional mechanic. Remember to eventually remove the putty from the cooling system as it may cause harm if it is not taken out at once.

If the rubber of the radiator is the problem, do the following:

  1. Locate the exact area of the hole in the rubber.
  2. Make sure that the hole is completely dry.
  3. Take two to three inches of duct tape and place it on the hole.
  4. Firmly press the tape.
  5. Place more tape around the hole.

How to Paint a Car

Car manufacturers only produce vehicles in a limited number of colors. This gives buyers a number of options to choose from. Car paint can also fade or be damaged over time. While repainting can be done by car shops, car owners themselves can do the paint job on their own.

Materials Needed

  • masking tape;
  • old newspapers/tarp;
  • car washing brush and detergent;
  • grease/wax remover;
  • sandpaper;
  • primer;
  • urethane-based paint;
  • paint sprayer;
  • goggles;
  • dust mask; and
  • knife and putty.

Car-painting Proper

  1. Wash your car with car detergent so that the paint can adhere properly. Use the grease/wax remover to get rid of the dirt that is still on the vehicle.
  2. Wear protective gear such as goggles and dust mask before you begin. Paint fumes and sandpapered dust are harmful if inhaled.
  3. Use sandpaper to remove any paint on the car. This will make sure the surface is smooth. Car paint can be better applied on smooth and even areas.
  4. Dry the surface of the car before painting. It should be totally dry. Drying takes around two hours after washing.
  5. Cover parts of the car that you would not want to get paint on (windows, mirrors, chrome, etc.) by taping old newspapers or tarpaulin on them.
  6. Before applying any paint, apply a primer to the entire car area. This will make sure the paint adheres to the surface of the car.
  7. After the primer dries, sand it down again to achieve a smooth surface.
  8. Paint the car with a urethane-based paint using a spray gun. Spray the base coat of paint smoothly over the car’s surface. Let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
  9. Apply multiple coats of paint if necessary to achieve the desired color. Make sure to let each layer dry before applying the next coating.
  10. Let the final coat dry for about 90 minutes.
  11. When the paint has completely dried, apply a clear coat of paint over it. About three coats of clear paint will be sufficient to complete a paint job.

How to Choose Mag Wheels

A mag wheel is a type of motor vehicle wheel with a series of symmetrical spokes or holes. The name comes from its most common component – magnesium. Magnesium alloy wheels are often shiny and are more lightweight than other types of wheels.

To choose a set of mag wheels for your vehicle, the first consideration is the strength. Determine how often you use your car and how far you usually go while driving it.

The next factor to consider is the sizing and fitting. You need to know two aspects: width and offset. In terms of width, you should get a set of mag wheels that can properly fit the space provided by your car. Once you have found the right set of mag wheels, you need to learn how to clean and maintain it. Use grease cleaner to remove dirt from the surface of the wheels. You can use an old toothbrush for the hard-to-reach areas of the wheels. Remember to do straight strokes as you are applying the cleaner. Do not use cleaning pastes and polishes containing ammonia or anhydrous chemicals. These products will instantly make your wheels look fine but will eventually make them dull.
