A ZIP file is created by compressing one or more files. This process often makes the total file size smaller. It can also be done to group a number of files together. This is often done by compression and archiving programs. A popular example is WinZip.
Users can create passwords for the files. This is for those that contain personal or sensitive information.
If you forgot or lost your password, you can use recovery tools. There are a number of software currently available for this such as Zip Cracker and Zip Password Recoverer. These programs can locate and recover a lost password.
If you did not forget your password, you can easily change it by using your current password. Go to the Account Settings/ Profile page and choose the option that leads you to your password. You will find a “Change Password” option there. This necessitates that you key in your current password and then type the new one you want to use.
Tips in Choosing a New Password
- Choose common nouns. Proper nouns such as names, birth dates, pets, brands and colors can be guessed easily. Common nouns are more generic and cannot be guessed easily.
- If the system allows it, use a passphrase. Putting different words together may seem random. It can also help you remember the phrase.
- Incorporate symbols, punctuations and numbers. If the password is case sensitive, mix uppercase and lowercase letters. Using variety in your password selection helps make it harder to guess.
