How to Cook Beer Can Chicken

Beer can chicken is one way of preparing your chicken barbecue. This process is done to make the chicken more tender and juicy. It can be cooked on an oven, a grill, or a smoker.




  • 1 whole chicken (around 4 pounds)
  • 1 12-ounce can beer
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp spice rub (for chicken)
  • garlic, onions, or other spices (optional)

Pre-heat the grill on medium heat. Remove the giblets from the chicken.

Thoroughly rinse the chicken inside and out with cold water. Use paper towels to pat the chicken dry.

Set the chicken aside for a few minutes.

Use a can opener to remove the beer can’s entire top. Mix together a half-can of beer with onions, garlic, and any other spices you want.

Rub the chicken with the vegetable oil. Then, put the spice rub on it. Use your hands to massage the oil and spice rub onto the chicken. Do this until the chicken is completely coated with the oil and spice rub.

Hold the chicken upright. Place it over the beer can, then insert the can into the chicken’s cavity.

Put the chicken and beer can on top of the grill. Use the chicken’s legs to secure it all in place.

Grill the chicken over indirect medium heat. This may take about one hour and 30 minutes. The inner temperature of the chicken should reach around 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the chicken is cooked and its juices run clear, remove the chicken and the can from the grill. Cover the chicken with foil for around 10 minutes. Remove the can from the chicken and slice the meat into desired sizes.
