How to Cut a Mohawk

How to Cut a Mohawk A Mohawk is done by shaving both sides of the head and leaving a strip of hair in the center. It may either be short and patch-like or long and fin-like in appearance and may also come in a myriad of colors.

The Mohawk was originally worn by Native American tribes of the past, saw a comeback and gained popularity during the 1980’s rise of the punk subculture. Back then, Mohawks were only seen adorning the heads of hardcore punk aficionados. Nowadays, almost anyone can avail themselves of this crazy hairdo.

You can cut the Mohawk by yourself, but for best results, it’s better if you have a friend nearby to assist you with the cutting.

Here is what you are going to need:

  • an electric hair clipper
  • a comb
  • scissors
  • a couple of rubber bands
  • some newspapers
  • a towel
  • a can of hairspray

Before proceeding, wash your hair first to make sure that the clipper doesn’t snag on any tangled hairs.

If you have long hair exceeding three inches, you need to trim them down at the sides first with a pair of scissors. Long hair does not cooperate very well with hair clippers. If your hair is curly, straighten it first with a flat iron.

Step 1. Towel your hair dry and wrap it around your neck afterwards, to avoid hair falling down your shirt. Spread some newspapers on the floor, to catch the hair so you wouldn’t be sweeping them later.

Step 2. Now, you must measure how thick you want to cut your Mohawk. Measuring the space between your irises is a good way to start. If you’re planning to have a long-finned Mohawk, you have to cut it thin and hold it up with some hairspray. If you cut it too thick, it’s not going to stand up easily.

Step 3. Now, we are to going to establish the strip of hair that you’re going to leave behind. According to your preferred thickness, part the middle hair into three sections and secure them with rubber bands. You might want to ask a friend do this, to make sure that it is straight.

Step 4. Turn your clippers on and buzz away the sides. Remove the rubber bands and stand upright with hairspray.

  • Have at least two mirrors around you. o If you have long sideburns, you can choose not to cut them and have a Mohawk with sideburns. This variation is called the Chelsea Mohawk.
